Your three realistic options: roaming, travel eSIM or local SIM

International roaming is the least complicated: your existing number works and there is nothing to install. The downside is price, which depends entirely on your home operator.

A travel eSIM is often the best compromise for a short holiday. You buy a data package before arrival, install it on a compatible phone and switch mobile data to that line after landing. Many travel eSIMs are data-only, so they do not give you a Brazilian phone number.

A Brazilian prepaid SIM or eSIM can offer local pricing and a local number, but registration is more complicated for visitors because Brazilian prepaid activation is built around identity verification. Do not assume you can buy a physical chip at an airport kiosk and be online in two minutes.

The CPF issue: why local prepaid activation can be awkward for foreigners

Anatel’s current prepaid-registration information describes an activation process that checks personal data and can require CPF, date of birth, Brazilian postcode, identification and a selfie. That works naturally for residents but can create friction for a visitor who does not have a CPF or local address.

Operators may have alternative procedures for foreign customers, often through a physical shop with a passport or other accepted document. The exact process can change by operator and channel, so if you specifically want a Brazilian number, go to an official Claro, TIM or Vivo store rather than depending on a reseller’s promise.

For a one- or two-week trip, this administrative friction is why many international visitors choose roaming or a travel eSIM even when a local prepaid package looks cheaper on paper.

Check that your phone is unlocked and compatible before you fly

A local SIM or eSIM only helps if the phone accepts another operator. Check that the device is carrier-unlocked. If your phone was sold with a network lock, only the original operator may be able to remove it.

Anatel notes that foreign phones can work in Brazil when they support the frequencies and technologies used by Brazilian networks. Modern European flagship phones usually cover the important bands, but older or region-specific devices deserve a compatibility check.

If you intend to use eSIM, confirm that your exact model supports it — not just the product family. Some versions sold in different countries have different SIM hardware.

Coverage is strong in cities and much less predictable in remote trips

In Rio, São Paulo, Salvador, Brasília and most major urban areas, mobile data is part of ordinary daily life. Problems become more likely when the itinerary moves into mountains, rainforest, wetlands, long highways, islands or small communities.

Anatel publishes coverage information and notes that even within a nominal coverage area, buildings, mountains and other obstacles can create dead zones. A lodge in the Pantanal or Amazon may deliberately have limited connectivity, and a boat trip can leave the network completely.

Download offline maps, hotel details, transport vouchers, flight confirmations and key addresses before a remote segment. If a guide or lodge says there is no reliable signal, believe them and tell family before you disappear from WhatsApp for two days.

WhatsApp, two SIMs and keeping your normal number

WhatsApp does not automatically change your account number just because you use a second SIM for data. You can normally keep WhatsApp registered to your home number while mobile data comes from a travel eSIM or Brazilian line.

Dual-SIM phones make this especially convenient: keep the home SIM active for important SMS or banking verification, but disable expensive data roaming on that line. Use the eSIM or local SIM for mobile data.

Before travel, make sure you know how your bank authenticates logins. Losing access to a home SIM at the same time as changing phones can turn a simple connectivity problem into a financial one.

Hotel Wi-Fi is useful, but mobile data is often safer and easier

Hotels, cafés, airports and shopping centres commonly offer Wi-Fi, but quality and login procedures vary. Use it for large downloads when convenient rather than making public Wi-Fi your only way to navigate the city.

Keep the phone locked, enable device-location tools and avoid doing sensitive banking through a network you do not trust. A personal mobile-data connection is usually the cleaner option for transport apps, maps and payments on the move.

What we would choose by trip type

One-week city trip: use your home operator’s affordable roaming package or a travel eSIM. Simplicity is worth more than saving a small amount on local data.

Two to four weeks: a travel eSIM still works well; consider a Brazilian prepaid line if you specifically need a local number or large amounts of data and are willing to activate it in an official store.

Remote nature itinerary: choose connectivity for the city portions, but plan to be offline in some places. No SIM solves the absence of mobile infrastructure. Download everything important beforehand.
