Why this place

Itacaré

Itacaré is one of Brazil’s strongest beach-and-nature combinations because the coast is not just a line of sand. Forest trails connect small coves, surf beaches and waterfalls; the Rio de Contas and nearby Taboquinhas add rafting and river experiences; cacao culture gives the region another identity beyond the ocean. The town itself provides restaurants and evening energy without feeling like a major resort city.

The Brasilll take

Itacaré is what happens when a beach destination is shaped as much by forest and rivers as by the sea.

The Atlantic Forest reaches almost to the water, so the best days often combine trails, coves, surf, waterfalls and food rather than one long beach session. The town adds enough restaurants and evening life to keep active travellers from feeling isolated. It is one of the strongest choices in Brazil for people who want tropical coast without giving up movement and variety.

Why Itacaré feels different from a conventional beach resort

01

The trail can be part of the beach

Some of the most rewarding coves are reached through Atlantic Forest rather than from a parking lot. The approach is part of the experience and also part of the physical effort.

02

Surf is important but not compulsory

Itacaré has a real surf identity, yet non-surfers still have waterfalls, river outings, calmer beaches, forest trails and cacao experiences.

03

The interior adds another dimension

Taboquinhas and the Rio de Contas bring rafting, river scenery and waterfall routes, making bad surf or a cloudy beach morning far less damaging to the trip.

Four useful pieces of an Itacaré trip

Pituba & town

Restaurants, bars, shops and the social base for evenings and organising the next day.

Urban coves

Resende, Tiririca and nearby beaches provide easy access to the coast and the town’s strongest surf atmosphere.

Southern beaches

Itacarezinho and other stretches south of town deliver bigger scenery, longer beach time and Atlantic Forest backdrops.

Taboquinhas & Rio de Contas

The inland adventure layer for rafting, waterfalls and a completely different relationship with the landscape.

Nature makes the destination richer and less predictable

01

Match the day to conditions

Rain, trail conditions, surf and river levels affect different activities in different ways. Keep a beach option, a forest option and a town option rather than forcing one rigid plan.

02

Use qualified local guides where appropriate

Municipal ecotourism guidance identifies routes where local guiding improves safety and access. This is especially sensible for less obvious waterfall and forest routes.

03

Mobility varies sharply by attraction

The town can be easy, but roots, mud, steps and sand appear quickly on nature days. Judge accessibility attraction by attraction rather than from the town centre alone.

A strong active-coast stay in five days

Day 1

Town and nearby beaches

Start with the easy coves around town and let Pituba become your practical evening base.

Day 2

Forest trail and beach

Choose a trail-linked beach day so the Atlantic Forest becomes part of the destination rather than scenery seen from a car.

Day 3

Rio de Contas or waterfalls

Move inland for rafting, river scenery or a guided waterfall route around Taboquinhas.

Day 4

Itacarezinho and southern coast

Use the road south for a longer beach day and one of the coast’s strongest landscape combinations.

Day 5

Surf, cacao or slow day

Choose the activity the weather and your energy level support, rather than trying to complete a checklist.

How long should you stay?

Five to six nights is ideal for an active traveller. Four can work, but six lets you absorb one rainy period or tired day without sacrificing the forest, river and beach mix that makes Itacaré special.
