  • Pele’s son Edinho sentenced to 33 years in prison

    Pele - Brazil´s Soccer Legend @ WikipediaThe son of Brazilian soccer legend Pele has been sentenced to 33 years in prison after being found guilty of laundering money for an alleged drug cartel. Edinho, full name Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, like his father was a soccer professional and played goalkeeper for the same team like his father, Santos.

    Edinho, who played goalkeeper and retired in the 1990s has had his share of run-ins with the law. His retirement came after a conviction of killing a motorcyclist although the decision was later overturned. He was first arrested in 2005 for drug trafficking offences and served a prison sentence.  (more…)

    Estádio Beira-Rio in Porto AlegreOfficially named Estádio José Pinheiro Borda, better known as Estadio Beira-Rio, is the biggest stadium in the south of Brazil and has a very rich history with the people of Porto Alegre. The stadium is the home of Internacional, arch-rivals to their Porto Alegre neighbours Gremio.

    History of Estádio Beira-Rio in Porto Alegre

    In 1956, the city of Porto Alegre donated the site on which Estadio Beira-Rio is located. The site is near the Guaiba river, giving rise to the mean of the stadium’s name in Portuguese, Riverside Stadium. The site had to be initially drained before construction could begin. Construction only began in 1959 due to the financial difficulties that Internacional was experiencing at the time. Internacional therefore relied heavily on their fans for contributions of building materials.  (more…)

  • Arena das Dunas Stadium in Natal

    Arena das DunasThe Estadio Arena das Dunas, literally “Dunes Arena,” is the culmination of a 3-year project in the city of Natal, to serve as one of the playing venues for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was designed by renowned sports architect Christopher Lee, who says that this is one of his finest pieces of work.

    History of Arena das Dunas in Natal

    This visual spectacle of a stadium is built on the same ground that the Estadio Joao Claudio de Vasconcelos Machado once stood. Better known as the Machadão, the previous stadium hosted titanic clashes for the major teams in Natal and its sounding areas. ABC, Alecrim and America all enjoyed this venue in their more successful days in the Brazilian top flight. However, in order for Natal to become one of the host cities for 2014 FIFA World Cup, a grander and more modern venue was required.  (more…)
