The 2014 FIFA World Cup is now less than a month away, with final squads being announced and more specific details about the tournament being announced. #1 The most important thing to know are the countries participating in the tournament. By regional groupings qualifying as follows:

#2 The 2014 World Cup will be held in a record 12 cities. The games will be played in Belo Horizonte, Brasilia Cuiaba, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and Sao Paolo.
#3 The official mascot is an endangered three-branded armadillo named Fuleco. ‘Ful’ comes from Futebol (Football) and ‘eco’ comes Ecologia (Ecology).
#4 The official ball to be used is the “Adidas Brazuca.”
#5 Goal-Line technology will be used for the first time ever. A custom watch worn by the referee will vibrate when a goal is scored.
#6 Vanishing spray will be used to provide a temporary visual marker for the referee to mark out the position on the pitch for free-kicks and where defensive walls are allowed to stand. It’s a white water based spray that disappears after a minute.

#9 Not all the citizens of Brazil are happy to host the World Cup due to the high costs, and poor service delivery within the nation. This has often lead to massive unrest and protests.
#10 This will be the most expensive World Cup to date with an estimated staggering 16 billion USD being pumped into hosting the tournament. Helps to explain the unrest.
#11 The prize money for the winner has been boosted from 31 to 35 million USD, whilst the runner up will receive 25 million USD.
#12 An episode of the hit carton TV series The Simpsons was solely dedicated to the 2014 Wold Cup. Homer takes charge of the final in which Germany beat the host nation 2-0.
#13 FIFA will ban players from showing any messages or pictures on their undergarments, even the good natured ones.
#14 The hosts are also the bookies favourites for outright winner, backed by a 10 year stretch of not losing a game at home. Germany are second with Argentina closely behind them in third.
