The Estadio Arena das Dunas, literally “Dunes Arena,” is the culmination of a 3-year project in the city of Natal, to serve as one of the playing venues for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The stadium was designed by renowned sports architect Christopher Lee, who says that this is one of his finest pieces of work.

This visual spectacle of a stadium is built on the same ground that the Estadio Joao Claudio de Vasconcelos Machado once stood. Better known as the Machadão, the previous stadium hosted titanic clashes for the major teams in Natal and its sounding areas. ABC, Alecrim and America all enjoyed this venue in their more successful days in the Brazilian top flight. The Castelão Stadium, originally named Estádio Governador Plácido Aderaldo Castelo, was opened after four years of construction on the 11th of November 1973, with the inaugural match being played between Ceara and Fortaleza.
The stadium is owed by the Ceara state government and an initiative of then governor Plácido Castelo, after whom the stadium was subsequently named after. The stadium is the home ground of local teams Ceara and Fortaleza. (more…)

Built for the 1950 FIFA World Cup, officially named after legendary journalist Mario Filho, the Estadio Jornalista Mario Filho is better known as the Maracanã Stadium. Built from August 1948 and officially opened on 16 June 1950 the Maracanã Stadium has played an iconic role in the history of football. Built to be the largest stadium in the world it boasted a capacity of 200 000 people. It is on this hallowed ground that Uruguay shocked the hosts by clinching the 1950 edition of the tournament with a 2-1 victory.
